Beginners Are Always Welcome
If you feel nervous, scared or a little intimidated, don’t let that stop you from coming to class. Bikram designed this class for beginners. With patience and a little practice, you'll quickly feel right at home. Remember, everyone has a unique first class experience that will never be forgotten. The people who have been coming for years make it look easy because they stuck with the yoga.

It takes about 3 to 5 classes to get acclimated to the heat. Try to take your second class within 24 hours. The second class is the equivalent of 3 to 4 classes, and you will bypass much of the soreness you’d experience otherwise. A minimum commitment of 10 classes in 30 days is required to derive maximum benefit from Bikram Yoga. Make up your mind to take 10 classes as quickly as possible. Then no one has to tell you how good this yoga is for you – your own experience will guide you.

 

Advice for First-Timers

Arrive early
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your first class to register and get comfortable with your surroundings. This applies to visiting Bikram Yoga students, regardless of previous experience. New students under the age of 18 need parental permission or should be accompanied by an adult for their first class. You can save time by printing and completing our registration form before you arrive.

Set up in the back
Set up your mat in the rear of the yoga room (mirrors are in front). Make sure you can see yourself in the mirror. We have mats available to use.

Expect to sweat
The room is heated, and sweating is an intentional component of Bikram Yoga. The heat is to warm your muscles, prevent injuries and allow for a deeper workout. Sweating helps flush toxins from the body.

Stay in the room
The class is 90 minutes consisting of a 50-minute standing series and a 40-minute floor series ( see the postures ). Each posture builds on the last and prepares for the next; therefore, plan to stay for the entire class. Each posture is done two times in order to gain better internal understanding and to allow for deeper connection in the second set.

Go easy on the water
Make sure you come to class already hydrated. During class, please wait to drink until our first water break (“party time”). This is after we’ve completed the first 4 warm-up poses. After that, drink as needed between postures, not during. In the floor series, it's best to drink after the Savasana between postures.

Don’t push too hard
You will feel challenged by the yoga during class, everyone does. Always work to your edge, but listen to your body and your inner wisdom. As a beginner, never be afraid to sit down if you need to. It’s normal, especially when you first get started, to feel dizzy, nauseous or lightheaded. It's temporary, and as your body acclimates and detoxes, these sensations will disappear.

No judgement
During class nobody will look at you or judge you. The teacher will guide you and instruct you, always with compassion and respect. No need to be self-conscious. It’s helpful to realize that people’s focus is on themselves, they are working too hard to even notice you.

Ask questions
Feel free to approach the teachers with any questions or concerns before and after class. If you require any modifications please speak to the teacher before class.

Don't rush off
Make sure you can stay at least a few minutes after class to cool down and relax. Be sure to drink plenty of water. Please take at least 3 classes before deciding if this is the right path for you. Your third class will be dramatically different from your first and will allow you a clearer assessment.
